Florida Dyslexia Legislation
Florida Passes Dyslexia Legislation
The Florida Legislature introduced SB1438(sponsored by Sen. Harrell) and HB1411 (sponsored by Rep.Polsky). Please contact you legislators and urge them to support this bill.
Under Florida Legislation, dyslexia is catagorized as a specific learning disability and requires “well-delivered scientific, research-based instruction and interventions addressing the identified area(s) of concern and delivered by qualified personnel in general education settings.”
In 2018, Florida passed legislation requiring early intervention, effective teaching strategies, and professional development for teachers. Specifically, HB 7029 mades it mandatory for all school districts to use scientifically-based screening and remediation programs and to train their teachers in these programs.
Florida also has the McKay Scholarship which provides scholarships that allow students with a 504 or IEP to attend private schools.
